Alexander Onischuk earned the Grandmaster title in 1994 in his native Ukraine and has since built one of the most consistent careers in American chess. He won the U.S. Championship in 2006 and was part of the U.S. team that took first place at the World Team Chess Championship in 2010. A distinguished Olympian medalist for the USA team, he has represented the United States in numerous Chess Olympiads over the years.

Alongside his work as a trainer for the KCF Young Stars, he has headed the chess program at Texas Tech University for over a decade. The team won the Pan-American Chess Championship in 2015 and 2019 and reached the Final Four five years running, a record that speaks for itself.
